SEND
Inclusion at St John's
The ethos of our school is to provide every child with a happy, caring and supportive learning environment in which they can develop their full potential whatever their needs and irrespective of ability, race and gender. Children with special educational needs are offered full access to a broad, balanced, challenging and relevant education.
At St John's Primary School, the teaching and learning, achievements, attitudes and well-being of every child matter. We recognise that some children require additional support in their learning at given times in their lives. Children are considered to have special educational needs if they have a particular need requiring special educational provision that is additional or different.
Children have special educational needs if they:
- have a particular learning, emotional, social or behavioural need , that differs from the majority of children of the same age, or
- have a physical disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the local education authority.
Children with SEN are offered full access to a broad, balanced, challenging and relevant curriculum for the EYFS and National Curriculum.
The aim of our Inclusion Policy is to provide access to the EYFS and the National Curriculum and all other areas of school life for children at our school at levels appropriate to their needs.
Principles
-
Every child should have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
-
Every child is entitled to an education designed to enable them to achieve their potential.
-
Every child has an equal right to participate in all the activities of the school so far as it is reasonably practical.
-
Every child is valued for the individual contribution they make to the school.
-
Every child’s needs are important. Some children may have special educational needs at some time in their career.
-
Every teacher is a teacher of children with special educational needs and has a responsibility to identify children’s needs, provide programmes of work which are appropriately differentiated for them, and monitor their progress.
-
The school will continually review the curriculum in terms of content, goals and expectations, methods and organisation in relation to the needs of all our children and to ensure pupil access.
-
Practices designed to help children with special educational needs should benefit all children.
-
Access to children’s records will be limited to those professionals who are working with the children and their parents/carers.
-
The school aims to ensure that the children make progress in line with prior attainment.
We recognise that SEN includes learning and mental health difficulties, emotional, social, sensory impairments, language disorders and physical disability. Children with educational special needs are identified through observation and ongoing assessment.
Equality at St John's
At St John's Primary School we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers receiving services from the school, irrespective of race, gender, disability, faith or religion or socio-economic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and able to participate fully in school life.
The Local Offer
Local Authorities and schools are required to publish and keep under review information about services they expect to be available for the children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities (SEND) aged 0-25. This is known as the ‘Local Offer’.
The intention of the Local Offer is to improve choice and transparency for families. It will also be an important resource for parents in understanding the range of services and provision in the local area. Information is published as part of the SEND reforms under the Children and Families Act 2014.
